Around the time Google announced "Big Daddy," there was a new Googlebot roaming the web. Since then I've heard stories from clients of websites and servers going down and previously unindexed content getting indexed.

I started digging into this and you'd be surprised at what I found out.

First, let's look at the timeline of events:

In Late September some astute spider watchers over at Webmasterworld spotted unique Googlebot activity. In fact, it was in this thread:  that the bot was first reported on. It concerned some posters who thought that perhaps this could be regular users masquerading as the famous bot.

Early on it also appeared that the new bot wasn't obeying the Robots.txt file. This is the protocol which allows or denies crawling to parts of a website.

Speculation grew on what the new crawler was until Matt Cutts mentioned a new Google test data center . For those that don't know, Matt Cutts is a senior engineer with Google and one of the few Google employees talking to us "regular folk." This mention happened in November.

There wasn't much mention of Big Daddy until early January of this year when Matt again blogged about it asking for feedback.

Much feedback was given on the accuracy of the results. There were also those that asked if the Mozilla Googlebot (known as "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)" in your visitor logs) and Big Daddy were related, but no response was made.

Now I'm going to begin some of my own speculation:

I do in fact believe the two are related. In fact, I think this new crawler will eventually replace the old crawlers just as Big Daddy will replace the current data infrastructure.

Why is this important?

Based on my observations, this crawler may be able to do so much more than the old crawler.

For one, it emulates a newer browser. The old bot was based on the Lynx text based browser. While I'm sure Google added features as time went on, the basic Lynx browser is just that – basic.

Which explains why Google couldn't deal with things like JavaScript, CSS and Flash.

However, with the new spider, built on the Mozilla engine, there are so many possibilities.

Just look at what your Mozilla or Firefox browser can do itself – render CSS, read and execute JavaScript and other scripting languages, even emulate other browsers.

But that's not all.

I've talked to a few of my clients and their sites are getting hammered by this new spider. It has gotten so bad that some of their servers have gone down because of the volume of traffic from this one spider!

On the plus side, I have clients who went from a few hundred thousand indexed pages to over 10 million in just a few weeks! Literally since December, 2005 there's been a 3500% increase in indexed pages over an 8 week period! Just so you know, this is also the client's site that went down because of the huge volume of crawling happening.

But that's still not all.

I have another client which uses IP recognition to serve content based on a person's geographic location. If you live in the US you get American content and pricing; if you live in the UK you get UK content and pricing. As you may imagine, the UK, US, Canadian and Australian content is all very similar. In fact about the only thing noticeably different is the pricing aspect.

This is my concern – if the duplicate content gets indexed by Google what will they do? There's a good chance that the site would be penalized or even banned for violation of the webmaster quality guidelines set forth by Google here:

This is why we implemented IP recognition – so that Googlebot, which crawls from US IP addresses only sees one version of the site.

However, a review of the server logs shows that this new Googlebot has been visiting not only the US content but also the content of the other sections of the site. Naturally, I wanted to verify that the IP recognition was working. It is. This leads me to wonder then; can this browser spoof its location and/or use a proxy?

Imagine that – the browser is smart enough to do some of its own testing by viewing the site from multiple IP addresses. If that's the case then those who cloak sites are going to have problems.

In any case, from the limited observations I've made, this new Google – both the data center and the spider – are going to change the way we do things.

This is not about right or wrong. You simply want to be clear about your personal values and make sure your business is in alignment.

Don't get me wrong this is important too. However, if you end up a millionaire with no time, poor health, and no friends or family to share it with would this be success for you? Only you can answer that.

However, the truth is you are better off knowing where you want to end up so you know how to design the map to get there. You want to considerate your lifestyle first and design your business around it.

So ask yourself a few questions:
a. How many hours a day to you want to work?
b. Are you willing to work weekends?
c. How much net profit do you want to make each year?
d. How many weeks or months of vacation will you take each year?
e. Will you work when you travel?

The more clearly you define what success in your business will look like in the future the easier it is to ask the right questions to help you get there.

7. Collaborate your way to success. For many people who have let the politics, back biting and brown nosing of corporate America we relish the idea of being able to create our empire alone. While on the surface this both looks and feels good the truth is that you can only accomplish so much alone.

The answer is yes and no.  Of course there are many individuals who've created a considerable amount of wealth in a short time period, but let's be realistic, that's not going to happen to most of us. Now obviously I'm not stating that all claims of wealth creation online are false, however I do believe that too many marketers oversimplify the task.  The truth is that there are thousands of ways to make money online; the hard part is finding a strategy that works for you and sticking to it.  Lots of people end up spinning their wheels for months jumping from idea to idea or quitting if desired results aren't achieved with a short time, and eventually give up after pulling their hair out and become discouraged.  Don't pull your hair out, find something that you have an interest in; for example if you want to become a drop-shipper, only focus you efforts on drop-shipping research and strategies.  Adequate research is the key to making it online.  Once you find your niche, conduct research on it.  I also strongly encourage  finding others who are in the same field, as it will benefit you to seek the guidance from vets who're making money already; you can have all the motivation in the world, but without any direction, you're left turning circles.

There's a reason why search engine marketing is so hot.  It works.  It consistent generates leads, sales, etc. at a lower cost-per-lead or cost-per-sale than traditional mediums like TV or direct mail advertising.  It makes sense when you think about it: when people want to find something online, they go to Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc. and search for it. 

Search engine marketing is all about SHOWING UP when people search for what you sell, offer, or have on your website.  There is a growing body of knowledge (books, articles, etc.) on how to do this.  And like anything else, it has become over analyzed and too complex.  To further complicate things, some search engine marketing techniques are ethical and legitimate, while some are not.  The best approach is to create a search engine marketing plan that focuses on two aspects:

1. Search engine optimization - showing up in the "free" area of the search engine's results

2. Pay-per click advertising - showing up in the "paid" area of the search engine's results

For search engine optimization, first realize there is no "silver bullet."  There just isn't a way to easily get ranked consistently high in the search engines.  It is a combination of factors that always come down to one underlying truth: build your website according to web standards, with a focus on accessibility for all. 

Just like search engine optimization, there is no "silver bullet" for pay-per click advertising, either.  Instead, the formula for PPC success is in well-placed bids (what you will pay to have your ad show up) combined with meaningful landing pages (where people go when they click on your ad).


3. Conduct Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The goal of search engine optimization is to make changes to your website to get higher rankings in search engines.  Yet, search engine optimization is a confusing sector.  On one hand, there are "snake oil salesmen" ready to get you a #1 ranking with their latest trick.  On the other hand, the things that actually do work are very simple, and frankly, just not very "sexy." 

The best strategy to take is a common-sense approach to SEO: develop standards for your website that ALL pages must adhere to.  If you do this, and enforce it, you can then branch out to some of the other "niche" aspects of SEO.

Here's a sample list of SEO standards to enforce on your website:

1. Write descriptive HTML page titles that really describe the page it is on (in 255 characters or less)

2. Write a summary sentence that really describes the page it is on (in 255 characters or less)

3. Write page content that is focused on

4. Write descriptive ALT text for all images that describes the concept the image illustrates and never use images for text

5. Build all pages to comply with current web standards observed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

Only once your web pages comply with the above standards should you start more advanced SEO techniques, including keyword targeting, 301 redirects, link building (getting more links to your site), RSS news feeds, blogs, and SEO-specific metrics and tracking.


4. Leverage Pay-Per Click Advertising

Pay-per click advertising helps you get more traffic from search engines through advertising in search engine results.  You pick terms that people search on.  You bid a price per click on your ad that you are willing to pay.  You ad shows up when someone searches on that term, and, if you're lucky, they click on your ad and come to your website.

So, pay-per click advertising really boils down to 3 components:

1. Picking keywords to advertise on (i.e. target keywords)

2. Determining what to bid for those target keywords

3. Writing copy for the ads that show up when people search

Picking keywords is all about knowing what terms your customers, clients, etc. would use when searching for your product or service.  There are several tools to help you generate ideas.  The best tools also check to see how many searches-per-month your target keywords receive.  You typically want to find keywords that generate a lot of searches every month, but are focused enough for your business.  For example, a company that sells Keen high-performance outdoor sandals probably would be best served bidding on "keen sandals" versus "sandals" which could include searches for the all-inclusive resort, Sandals.

Determining what to bid for your keywords can be a highly-scientific process, sometimes managed by complex software and several key metrics.  To keep it simple, let a tool like Google Adwords Traffic Estimator recommend to you what to bid at first.  Start there, and start small.  Your best bet is to lock-in a low daily budget limit until you are comfortable with the impressions your ads are getting, the flow of traffic from the ads to your website, and what those people do once they get to your website.

Writing ad copy comes down to writing a headline that people will click on, and creating compelling copy below that headline/link that will get people to click. 

Headlines are best created by following what magazine covers do: focus on getting attention through eye-catching, short phrases.  Using words like best (i.e. "Best Tips for a Summer Barbeque"), ultimate (i.e. "Ultimate National Park Vacations") and number-based lists (i.e. "Top 5 Hybrid Cars for 2006") have all been proven to work. 

Writing effective ad copy below the title/link is really about reinforcing the term(s) search for.  This means using the keywords in the ad copy, and starting the copy with an action verb.

By following the approach above, you can create or evaluate your search engine marketing strategy, focus on what matters most when executing your plans, and more effectively achieve your goals.

To really maximise your eBay ebook sales you need to be promoting your eBay store.  eBay stores get less exposure than normal eBay listings and therefore will not yield great sales for you unless you promote them.  There are many ways both on and off eBay that you can promote your eBay store.  This article outlines some of them:

1) Ebay Auction Listings:- eBay Auction and Buy It Now listings get the main exposure on eBay.  When someone does an eBay search for an item all the eBay Auction and Buy It Now listings are displayed first.  Then after these the eBay Store listings are displayed.  Since these Auction and Buy It Now listings are getting the most exposure it makes sense to run a few of these and insert a link to your eBay store inside the actual description.  This works especially well with Auction listings as people often click the link so they can buy the item instantly from your eBay store rather than wait for the auction to end.

2) Ebay About Me Page:- The eBay About Me page is one of the best free opportunity's eBay provides to promote yourself.  Every time someone on eBay sees your eBay ID (whether you bid on something, leave feedback, or buy an item) there will be an About Me logo next to it and some people will click this logo.  Despite this, it really is one of the most under utilised tools on eBay.  If you do not yet have an eBay About Me page yet then get one NOW.  Use it to write about your eBay store and tell people why they should buy from you.

3) Ebay Reviews and Guides:- These are a relatively new addition to eBay but they are still a great way to promote your eBay store for free.  The reviews section allows you to write product reviews such as CDs and DVDs.  The guides section is more relevant to eBay sellers as it allows you to write guides on just about anything.  There has got to be some topic that you can write a guide on so get righting now.  When people read your guide they are presented with a link to your eBay store which is again more free exposure.

4) Ebay Seller Cross Promotion:- I outlined in the last article that with an eBay store you can cross-promote your items.  Recently eBay has also added the ability to cross-promote with other sellers.  This is very easy to set up and eBay manages the whole process for you.  All you have to do is go to the "Cross-Promotion Connections" area of My eBay and then use the request cross-promotions link in order to set them up.  If the other seller agrees then a box promoting their products will appear on your listings and vice versa.  This is a valuable way to increase your eBay sales and also generate more traffic to your eBay store.

5) Search Engines:- As I mentioned in my last article you get an actual URL with your eBay store.  This URL gets listed in the eBay stores directory and search engines which means extra traffic for your eBay store.  What's more eBay allows you to pick your search engine keywords so you can be listed under the categories that you feel are most appropriate to your eBay store.  Getting listed in the search engines is a great way to bring in customers from outside of eBay and maximise your sales potential.

6) Store RSS Feed:- When you access the home page of an eBay store you may notice a small RSS box in the bottom left corner.  If you click on this RSS box then you will be shown your store's RSS feed.  Now I myself am not an expert in RSS but I do know that it is another way to promote your eBay store easily and effectively from outside of eBay.  You can get some free software that submits your RSS feeds to the main RSS directories by doing a search on Google.

7) Blogging:- For those who don't know a blog is a weblog.  It's basically like an online journal where you post your thoughts, comments, or whatever else you want.  Blogging is an excellent way to get traffic to your eBay store.  Quite a few websites offer free blogs which you can sign up for and then link back to your eBay store.  Post in it regularly to gain exposure and your blog should soon become a great source of traffic.

8) Article Submission:- There are 100s of article directories out there that will you can submit your articles to, and if accepted you are allowed to have a live link back to your website or eBay store in the author resource box.  This is a great way to generate traffic to your website in the long-term as not only do the search engines index your article, but people also reprint these articles on their websites complete with your author resource box (and live link back to your eBay store).  The longer your article is online the more it will be reprinted and so the more traffic it will generate.

And all this spending should happen simultaneously: You need to keep your prospect funnel full while continuing to convert prospects into paying customers. You can start by using marketing to:
1. Replace former customers with new ones. Customers come and customers go. Sometimes they leave because of us, sometimes because of them and sometimes because of factors beyond the control of either. This can't always be predicted or forecasted. To safeguard against this, you must use marketing to replace former customers with new ones. Obviously, not everyone you market to will become a customer. But to increase your chances of getting those all-important new customers, you must continually put your message in places where they'll see it.
Successful marketing is made up of many, many things done over and over. Without a consistent, repeated effort, there'll be no new customers to replace the old ones, and you'll soon enter what's known as the "death spiral" for your business. You can't allow this to happen!
2. Pay attention to your customers. Imagine for a moment that you've secured new business from more customers than you ever dreamed. The good news is, you'll be busy fulfilling their every need. The bad news is that lack of attention is the number-one reason customers abandon a business.
So if you get busy, how can you stay in touch with your most valuable customers on a regular basis? The answer is marketing. Different marketing vehicles can reach out to them and show that you're paying attention to them. You can send thank-you cards, special offers, tips and techniques, newsletters and more. The type of marketing activities let you stay in touch without being there in person.
3. Keep customers informed. Now let's say that your business is growing, and you've decided to introduce new services and products. Who will buy them? Current customers will, as well as new ones-but they won't buy unless they know about your new offerings. Product announcements, press releases, newsletter ads and advertising are just a few of the marketing vehicles that can be used to alert prospects and customers to your new products and services. Marketing once again saves the day, pays attention to your customers, informs and educates them, and causes them to eventually empty their wallets into yours.
Effective use of these guerrilla marketing tactics will let you keep your marketing costs down while increasing your return on the dollars you do spend.

If you are not submitting articles to article directories you should start now.
I had been online for several years and always heard that you needed to submit articles. Of course I never did for the fact that I didn't have a clue about search engine optimizations and since I didn't, I really had no need to submit articles.

Boy was I wrong! In fact I don't know if I have ever been so wrong in my life :)   To this day I don't know much about search engines but I don't really need to. I get close to 1200 hits a day just from articles that I have submitted to numerous directories.

Submitting an article is just as easy as it sounds, write an article and submit it.
However if you don't find the effort rewarding like I did you would never start. So I am going to try to do my best to convince you otherwise.

A good strategy that I have come up with is everytime I write an article and add it to my website I also submit it to the numerous article directories that I have found and added to my notepad. I have 47 article directories saved in my notepad it only takes about an hour to submit one article to all of them.

On average I send around 3 articles a week to those 47 directories and on average I net 15-25 sales a week on various programs. If you think about it 1 hour a day is nothing compared to the rewards.

I  have also started to use Isnare to auto submit my article to hundreds of ezine publishers a day which is a steal for only $2 bucks I spend a day.
Ezine announcer isn't to shabby either. Remember that I don't know much about search engines and I get around 100 unique visitors a day to my blog from google.

When you start submitting articles at a rapid pace as I do you will see outstanding results. You probably won't believe your eyes as I did when sales start flooding your inbox. Something this simple should not be overlooked by any marketer and I hope this article shows you why.

From bloggers, column writers, and e-books, the writing industry is yearning for more great writers. The internet marketing community is especially hurting for better content.

With the birth of SEO (search engine optimization), people all over the world are searching, browsing, and reading everything they can on how to promote their business on the internet. Because of this demand for different content, the supply of writers are increasing everyday but the quality of articles is decreasing exponentially.

Everyone is writing about the exact same thing! My company receives on average 10-20 articles per hour submitted to us. I would have to say that only 1 in about 100 articles submitted are ever published within our website. Those numbers are extremely low and for good reason.

It's all about "substance" - or lack of it!

Many articles we review are nothing more than simple "babble" and most of them are pointless. You can seriously tell right away whether the article is just a promotional piece or something with actual substance within the content.

Great content is very important. There is a misconception out there that most people won't read your content and you can pretty much post anything you want within your website as long as your website is clean, professional looking, and can be found online.

If there is one constant online, it's the fact that the general public is getting smarter and more knowledgeable on how to research for honest, reputable companies on the internet.

Unfortunately, authors these days are simply stealing from other great authors!

I am not talking about posting someone else's article on your website! Copying content from other leaders in your industry will only hurt your company. This is why the writing industry is getting worse; many writers out there simply select a topic they want to write about, then they go online and find 5 articles on that topic. Once they have some other great articles, they simply proceed to combine each article for themselves, by personalizing the content a little.

Do you ever wonder why for specific topics within your industry, you can find hundreds of authors that wrote almost the exact same thing? I call these people "Content Copiers".

Even worse are people who buy articles to post online ! ! !

This gets me every time. Did you know that you can now hire a company to write something for you and insert your company information as the source and author of the article? This strategy is seriously sad considering I can almost guarantee you that the article you just bought was also sold to a handful of other companies. All they do is tweak the article a little bit and insert a different title.

No one knows your business more than you do. If you are seriously good at what you do, 9 times out of 10, you probably have enough knowledge to write an article that makes sense, that is unique in content, and that has your personal touch.

We've all come across different situations while operating our businesses. These small but important situations are what gives us confidence in what we do. When you learn from your mistakes, you should also consider educating people on what you've learned in order to help your potential clients or even help better educate your industry.

Think beyond yourself and write down something helpful.

I have narrowed down what I think are the top 6 ideas to improving a dropshipping website -

1. Site Structure - Make sure your site loads fast, and that the code is clean. If you built the website yourself, or had someone else build it, did you make sure (you or) they used CSS, and that it validates. When using CSS you make sure that everything on the site is uniform. The font size, style of font, colors used etc. You will lose more customers then you realize by having a site that looks like it was designed by a 6th grader in a computer class. I know you have seen them. Text that is a rainbow of colors. First paragraph green, second paragraph red, next yellow and so on (just repeat any color you can think of and you get the point). Creating a site like this is very unprofessional and you will not be taken serious.

2. Images, graphics and banners - Make sure that you are using the cleanest looking, fastest loading and most optimized images you can. There are several programs out there that will help you optimize your images for the web. You may even have some software on your computer and not even know it. Most programs like Photo Shop, or Paint Shop Pro (even the basic operating system photo programs) have image optimization programs that can help speed up the load time and clarity of the photo. The more images that can help describe the product you are selling, the better. Remember the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.

3. Site Navigation - If your potential customers can't browse through your site easily, or feel they are lost, you will lose them 80% of the time from my experience and website analytics tracking. I try to follow the "3 click rule", meaning that it will not take people more then 3 clicks to get to your shopping cart. Also make sure you add an html site map and a universal search engine site map so the search engines can know about the pages you are offering and when they are updated. Doing this will help you have the freshest content from your site on the search engines.

4. Amazing Unique Keyword Rich Content - The more information you can provide the better. People get on search engines to look for what? Information. If you are not providing information that is at the very least better then your competition, then you might as well give up. For example, if you are working with a supplier, and so are 1000 other people, how many of those people do you think are just copy and pasting the product descriptions and not doing anything they can to make it their own using the keywords they want to target? Most of those people are not doing anything to make their content better (from my experience) so even just changing things around a little and making the content better by being more descriptive and using more keywords will put you ahead of the competition 100%.

5. Make Me Feel Safe - If you do not have any kind of SSL certificate, BBL logo, or "hacker safe" logo on your site, then you need to research these out and do whatever you can to get at least one of these added to your site where visitors can clearly see. With all of the talk going on about identity theft people are very weary these days about giving credit card info online. So, anything you can do to help people feel safer on your site (even a little bit) will help increase sales.

6. Contact Info - People are curious by nature, and the thing that runs through my mind more then anything when I am visiting a site is - "Who is the person behind this?" I want to know that I can talk to a human if needed and that someone will be there to actually answer my email or return my call. Make sure you have a phone number where people can contact you, email address and mailing address. When people know they can contact you they feel safer and will be less hesitant to purchase from you.

I have blogged a lot about these topics in the past, but i wanted to do a new post and talk about what I believe are the most important things you can be doing right now to improve how things are going on your website. These are not hard or costly steps, but will take some time and planning. If you get started implementing them now it will pay off in the long run.

New Year's resolutions are launched with good intentions by the tens of millions every December. And somewhere along the way - usually in January - most of them become an afterthought. The mere topic of New Year's resolutions only gets pulled up again in December, when planning (yet again) for the next year.

But a business goal is a horse of a different color.

Because business goals directly tie-in to one's finances - which in turn affects how we live - we pursue them more aggressively. That's the good news.

However in that pursuit lies several pitfalls. Pitfalls that are well hidden from the naked eye. Pitfalls that only reveal themselves once we begin our business goal achievement quest.

What are those pitfalls exactly? Here are three that strike most entrepreneurs at the least favorable moments:

1) You fell for the infamous "You are LIMITLESS" mantra.
Bestselling spiritual/self-help author Wayne Dyer often reminds his followers, "We are spiritual beings having a human experience."

And even though the soul may be free as vast as the universe - we are still confined to an overcoat of skin and bones and gravity. And it is this temporary overcoat that causes very real limitations.

I mean let's face it, there can only be one American Idol in 2008 (or Canadian Idol or whatever Idol for the part of the world you live in). There's one President, one Queen, one gold medalist slalom skier, one winner of the Best Actor on Academy Awards night.

And even though you may deeply yearn, affirm and visualize holding one these positions, you might not ever end up there.

A good friend of mine had an uncle who owned a horse ranch. He was a masterful rider and dreamt of becoming a famous jockey. But at the age of 16 he was almost 6 feet tall. Which is apparently too tall to become a jockey.

We - as human beings - all have limits. Limits caused by financial circumstances, family obligations, time constraints, lack of knowledge, lack of skill, age restrictions, height restrictions, and so on.

The thing is, limitations should never be viewed as stop signs. On the contrary, they allow us to confidently move in directions that work with our natural talents, abilities and lifestyles. Limitations allow us to see how we can improve ourselves.

So acknowledge your limitations. (It's okay!) And if you can't beat 'em, be confident and wise enough to work around 'em.

2) You didn't anticipate the potential problems along the way - or the residuals of success.
As I write this article the jackpot for the New York state lottery is at $115 million dollars. Manhattan office workers file into the deli's during their lunch hour to stand on those lottery lines, and fantasize amongst each other about winning.

From the middle class viewpoint, a big lottery win looks absolutely delicious. But Dr. Steven J. Danish, professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, paints a very different picture.

According to "Windfall not always a blessing, psychologists say,"
"Danish has counseled lottery winners for more than 12 years, and almost all his patients have had serious problems after collecting their winnings. After the initial shock passes, a sense of guilt often arrives, along with the hoards of people asking for money. Giving or leaving money to family -- including mysterious, long-lost relatives -- is often the biggest source of stress, he said."

But this phenomena isn't limited to lottery winners. It happens to entrepreneurs as well.

Yes, your eyes always have to be peeled for the potholes in the road. But you must also consider the problems that come with extreme success.

For example, will you have enough inventory if a positive review of your product generates a flood of 10,000 orders? How will you manage your time fulfilling orders? Do you have a babysitter lined up for business emergencies?

Don't focus on failure. Do create a mindset of preparedness.

3) You focus a lot of energy on past mistakes, instead of learning from them and moving on.
A very dear friend whom I've known for 15 years has been wanting to start his own business for as long as I've known him. Early in our friendship he and his sister-in-law decided to do some kind of venture together. The venture flopped. He lost $4K, while she lost almost nothing.

Over a decade later, he still talks about how much he wants to go into business for himself. But the memory of losing that $4K re-plays itself over and over in his mind. It's the reason why he commutes to a government job every day, instead of taking the plunge and starting his own business.

Sadly enough, he rationalizes his inability to move forward by saying that he'd rather be 100% sure that he's doing the right thing, instead of going in with a half-baked idea.

My outlook as a seasoned entrepreneur is a little different. Nothing in life is 100% guaranteed. The best-laid plans can be thwarted in the blink of an eye. The best you can do is learn from the past (not LIVE in the past) and move on.
